A "Greenhouse Gas" Experiment for the Undergraduate Laboratory
Gomez, Elaine; Paul, Melissa; Como, Charles; Barat, Robert
Chemical Engineering Education, v48 n2 p107-112 Spr 2014
This experiment and analysis offer an effective experience in greenhouse gas reduction. Ammoniated water is flowed counter-current to a simulated flue gas of air and CO2 in a packed column. The gaseous CO2 concentrations are measured with an on-line, non- dispersive, infrared analyzer. Column operating parameters include total gas flux, dissolved NH3 concentration, liquid flux, and inlet CO2 partial pressure. The CO2 capture efficiency is correlated using a kinetic model with a dimensionless Stanton number and a mass transfer coefficient.
