African American English: A Linguistic Introduction.
Green, Lisa J.
This introduction to African American English (AAE) looks at the grammar as a whole, describing patterns in sentence structure, sound system, word formation, and word use in AAE. The book uses linguistic description and data from conversation to explain that AAE is not a compilation of random deviations from mainstream English but rather a rule-governed system. Eight chapters focus on: (1) "Lexicons and Meaning" (lexicons and AAE, structuring the lexicon, and slang); (2) "Syntax Part I: Verbal Markers in AAE" (auxiliaries, aspectual markers, and preverbal markers); (3) "Syntax Part II: Syntactic and Morphosyntactic Properties in AAE"; (4) "Phonology of AAE" (e.g., final consonant sounds, devoicing, sound patterns and th, and prosodic features: stress and intonation); (5) "Speech Events and Rules of Interaction in AAE" (e.g., verbal strategies, expressions in nonverbal communication, and language use and rap); (6) "AAE in Literature" (AAE in literature throughout history); (7) "AAE in the Media" (e.g., speech events in television and film and indicators of adolescent street language); and (8) "Approaches, Attitudes and Education." The book includes exercises to accompany each chapter. (Contains approximately 260 references.) (SM)
