Diagrams: A Visual Survey of Graphs, Maps, Charts and Diagrams for the Graphic Designer.
Lockwood, Arthur
Since the ultimate success of any diagram rests in its clarity, it is important that the designer select a method of presentation which will achieve this aim. He should be aware of the various ways in which statistics can be shown diagrammatically, how information can be incorporated in maps, and how events can be plotted in chart or graph form. This book, written especially for the graphic designer, concentrates on the purpose, execution, and relative success of each type of diagram and uses specific examples to suggest ideas and illustrate the discussion. The first part deals with statistical diagrams: line graphs, logarithmic graphs, scatter graphs, bar graphs, population pyramids, bar and block diagrams, and pictorial graphs. Explanatory and statistical maps are detailed in the second part: weather and route maps, games and battles, bars, blocks, squares, dots, and circles. The third part covers explanatory diagrams: flow charts, organization charts, family trees, tabulations, and time charts. A final section examines engineering drawing and three-dimensional presentation. (Author/SH)
