Too Many Couples
Kay, Joseph
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n32 pC3 Apr 2007
In this article, the author offers his ad hoc reflections on the question of just how many academic couples a department could comfortably accommodate from the point of view of good governance, in the hope of getting an honest dialogue started and seeing some reasonable guidelines eventually created by one organization or another as a result. He discusses the problems associated with hiring academic couples and provides some possible solutions, each of which has its own intricacies. Based on all positive and negative considerations, his view is that one or two academic couples (hired in different subfields) is the maximum that most medium-to-large departments can fruitfully accommodate. Depending on their circumstances, smaller departments or a single program may not be able to function properly with even one couple. There is also a need to discuss this issue openly and honestly. Professional societies, governmental agencies, or university leaders are needed to come up with reasonable guidelines. Departments should not be forced to confront this issue on the spur of the moment during a search, when they already have enough decisions to make.
