When Good People Happen to Bad Things: Student Learning in Unfortunate Times
Shushok, Frank, Jr.
About Campus, v15 n1 p18-23 Mar-Apr 2010
Everyone at some point has asked the question "Why do bad things happen to good people? Even while asking it, most know that finding an answer to this question is not likely in their future. People's best responsible action, then, is to manage their risks to prevent future bad things from occurring, to the greatest extent possible. Risk management, policy development, and increased security are all important responses to making one's college and university environments safer. In this article, the author discusses how campus tragedy in reality can provide learning and growth opportunities for students, educators, and the humanity. He offers five things campuses can do to strengthen learning in preparation for times of tragedy. (Contains 8 notes.)
