Shao Nian Gong--A Children's Palace: Ideas for Teaching About China.
Shoresman, Michele; Gumport, Roberta
Children throughout the world enjoy similar activities. By experiencing the same games, foods, and activities that Chinese children enjoy, children in the United States can learn about Chinese culture. A variety of experiences are suggested to encourage active learning and involvement on the part of students with the aim of incorporating the study of China into the mathematics, English, art, physical education, science, and the social studies curricula. The directions are designed to be followed by the children independently or with a partner. The goal is for the students to accept responsibility for discovering and learning about China. Specific topics include: Artifacts, Chinese Language, Literature from the People's Republic of China, China's Geography, How to Use a Suanpan and Puzzles, Chinese Delicacies, Chinese Inventions, Crafts, Games and Exercises, and Productive Labor.
