Teaching Business German Basics on the Second Year Level.
Rockwood, Heidi M.
Most college curricula in business German are oriented to third- and fourth-year German students. Development of a course in introductory business German designed for the second year of language instruction required careful selection of materials and activities. Texts were selected for their comprehensibility for students with no business background and for their internal logic, vocabulary, and syntax, according to Goethe Institute guidelines. Some materials were drawn from existing textbooks, and others were taken from newspapers and magazines. Exercises and activities were designed to increase reading ability and vocabulary recognition, provide some letter-writing skills, and provide limited ability to speak about the subjects under discussion. They include underlining familiar words in the text, writing brief headlines for paragraphs, answering multiple-choice comprehension questions, determining the intended audience, answering true-false questions, locating certain statements, using textual information to select the correct version of another text, using context to determine vocabulary meanings, coordinating terms with definitions, filling in blanks, writing letters and letter elements from information provided, and carrying on conversations about specific topics. Student response to the course has been favorable, and a formal evaluation will be done. (MSE)
