The rebirth of the home as workshop, studio, and laboratory, due in large part to the advent of the microcomputer, will accelerate the spread of alternative modes of education and the process of "deschooling" society. Formal education as we know it developed as a result of social, historical, and economic factors that are no longer applicable. As a result, education is failing to meet today's needs and a number of critics are calling for either the abolition of educational institutions or at least extensive deemphasis of their role in a more widely-based, less formal educational system. This article suggests that the home computer-based learning system can be a major component in the new educational environment. Microcomputer hardware currently available is described and possible home applications for computer systems are discussed. The author concludes by suggesting that the electronic model of matter as a relational substance and the nature of mathematics as a relational science might prove to be keys to an intellectual renaissance that could underlie a global revolution in educational philosophy.
