Apparel Graduate Course Focuses on Global Economy
Warnock, Mary M.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n3 p44-45 2006
Students at all levels of study must understand the impact and consequences of globalization. Because of technology innovations, integration of world economies through trade and cash flows, and the movement of people from one location to another, the world is becoming flatter. Based on this growing need to study globalization, a graduate course, Apparel Studies in the Global Economy, was developed in 2005 to analyze economic, social, and political aspects of domestic and international apparel and textile industries. Students provided the foundation for this class experience by developing a theoretical framework based on the historical perspective of the textile industry. They discovered very quickly that, in order to understand today's world, one must take an in-depth look at the past. This foundation was then used to discuss the apparel and textile industries from a global perspective. Here, examples of class activities are presented.
