Stained-Glass Pastels
Laird, Shirley
Arts & Activities, v145 n2 p18-19 Mar 2009
The author has always liked the look of stained-glass windows. Usually the designs are simplified and the shapes are easier for younger students to draw. This technique seemed to be the perfect place for her fifth-graders to try their hand at color mixing. The smaller spaces and simple shapes were just what she needed for this group. Her students started with a light pencil line to do the basic layout of the design. When the basic layout was finished, students drew in the actual design with thick black markers. The blended colors and simple shapes were an excellent combination for these younger students. They were all thrilled with the outcome, and the finished projects made quite an impressive display. This stained-glass design project really "lead" to an excellent oil-pastel and color-mixing exercise.
