Talking Maths
Murray, Jenny
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n199 p15-17 Nov 2006
Discussion in maths lessons has always been something encouraged by ATM but can be difficult to initiate for non-specialist and inexperienced teachers who may feel they need material in books to get them going. In this article, the author describes resources aimed at encouraging discussion among primary mathematicians. These resources include: (1) BEAM's new "Talk it, solve it" books (Pennant, 2005); (2) "We can work it out!" (Vickery & Spooner, 2004); and (3) Gill Hatch's "Geometry games" (Hatch, 2005). All these materials "worked" in that they got children discussing the problem. The groups ranged from a pair to six participants. Nearly everybody was engaged, interested in the final result and wanting to do more. It is exciting to see so much maths being done without having to write anything down! (Contains 4 figures.)
