Information Technology: Unlocking the Door to Differentiation in the 21st Century
Kyburg, Robin M.
Understanding Our Gifted, v19 n2 p7-11 Win 2007
Maria, Sergio, and Steven, whose stories are described in this article, are gifted students whose needs were served through technology. Tapping into the Internet, these students, as well as other learners with varying needs, can be provided with appropriately challenging work that allows them to develop and make unique contributions to the class. This article offers a chart that provides a summary of key concepts in differentiation and how each can be facilitated through information technology. Teachers need anchors in this rapidly changing information society. The guidelines described in this article can be thought of as anchors in two senses: a solid base and a safe springboard. Accommodating this dual notion of both a secure place to hold on to and a solid base from which to spring free provides a good model for thinking about the Internet and technology and their impact on learning in general.
