It has become increasingly evident that juveniles are the perpetrators of a substantial nunber of sexual assaults. Programs designed to treat these adolescent perpetrators usually have similar goals. They attempt to reduce the youth's risk of recidivism by helping him to recognize his problem, take responsibility for his actions, learn how to control his behavior, reevaluate his attitudes and values toward sexuality and aggression, develop a positive self-concept, learn new social skills, and engage in reeducation and resocialization. In designing programs, several therapeutic and administrative issues must be addressed in the areas of informed consent, family involvement, labeling, segregating sex offenders, staff selection and training, and exit criteria. A review of community based programs and five specific residential programs revealed that, across programs, the educational model was predominant. Treatment techniques included an eclectic combination of role play, psychodrama, gestalt therapy, Transactional Analysis, guided interaction therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, and behavioral therapy. Program components included family therapy, education in human sexuality, victim awareness, interpersonal skills, anger management, grief work, journal keeping, survival skills, sex-role education, substance abuse work, and general education.
