Leave No Arts Behind
Rohrer, Ken
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v105 n1 p48 Sep 2005
The goal of No Child Left Behind Act is for 100% of all children to pass their state's standardized tests by the year 2014. With the act steadily increasing expectations for schools, teachers are scrambling to raise test scores. Because the arts are not included in most state standardized tests, schools are cutting these programs and putting all their money into teaching state standards and raising test scores. Since the inception of NCLB, many schools have narrowed their focus to only curriculum that addresses state standards included in statewide testing. The arts and humanities are stripped away and some feel that teachers are now "teaching to the test." Ironically, the act is causing teachers to cover less subject matter than before the act. Students are learning less and are not exposed to many historical events, the classics, and the arts. In this article, the author explains that art teachers can fight this tide by using integrated thematic instruction, an instruction wherein subjects such as geometry and architecture, language arts and book illustration, and science and medical illustration are integrated. In this way, students are not only "covering" the standards--they are learning them through the arts.
