While the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) celebrated its 100th anniversary in August 2014 in Washington, DC, the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020 in Washington, DC. The mission of NCSS is to provide leadership, service, and support for all social studies educators; NCSS is the largest social studies organization in the country devoted to strengthening and advocating social studies. Serving as an umbrella organization for K-16 teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education, NCSS defines social studies as the "the integrated study of social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." NCSS states that within the school program, social studies provides a coordinated and systematic study drawing upon the umbrella disciplines it represents to promote knowledge and involvement in civic affairs. Geography is one of the content subjects that can be found within NCSS. Geography educators have fought for many years for a stronger voice for geography within NCSS, and in 2013 geography was one of four key subjects identified as part of the Social Studies for the Next Generation: Purposes, Practices, and Implications of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards. The efforts of two longtime geography supports and past presidents of NCGE, Susan Hardwick (2003) and Robert Morrill (1989) served as the voices for geography as the C3 framework was written. Geography teacher columnist Jim Hauf has written about the C3 framework, and together, Hauf and Paul Nagel have presented at both the NCGE annual conference and at the NCSS conference about geography's role within the C3 framework and how an inquiry approach can be taken in the classroom. Presenting at the NCSS annual conference about geography is just one way that NCGE members can bridge the aisle and reach others who may underestimate the role that geography plays in everyday activities. Being a member and joining the Geography Community allows members to share teaching ideas, resources, and other opportunities for geography education. In this commentary, author Paul Nagel, encourages NCSS members to become more actively involved in the NCSS and discusses ways members can achieve that goal such as being a proposals reviewer for conferences.
