Geography Education: Applying Spatial Aspects to Everyday Life: American Association of Geographers Geography Education Specialty Group
Wessell, Jonathan E.
Geography Teacher, v13 n1 p29-30 2016
Throughout his career teaching geography, Johnathan Wessell has always stressed to his students that they already knew a lot about geography before they entered his classroom. He writes in this article that once he convinces his students of this, they begin to realize that geography is all around them, and that they, in turn, begin to shift their thinking toward the subject, as they begin to think of themselves as a part of geography. The Geography Education Specialty Group (GESG) of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) is attempting to promote a similar way of thinking "spatially" for geography students through its efforts with geography professionals. Each year at the AAG Annual Conference this group comes together to discuss these efforts and share this knowledge in four distinct ways: (1) The Annual Meeting; (2) Conference Sessions; (3) The GESG annually supports the research and writing efforts of undergraduate and graduate students by providing a paper competition, the Gail Hobbs Paper Competition; and (4) Ongoing Projects. Members of GESG, and specialty groups in the AAG are encouraged to provide input so more professionals will discuss, research, and write about geography education.
