Songs that Teach: Using Song-Poems to Teach Critically

Guiding students through a unit of study in any discipline can be a challenging endeavor. Answers to possible questions that may be raised about historical events and literary texts cannot be confined to just one text, one author's point of view, or even one genre. The song-poem, in combination with poetry, novels, nonfiction, and other genres, is one important genre for teachers to use to encourage students to be critical-edge readers, trying on multiple perspectives, asking questions not only about the texts but also about the advantages and disadvantages offered by various genres and points of view. Using a Bob Dylan song in connection with two Chris Crowe books on the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, the author describes the value of teaching nonfiction with song-poems. (Contains 2 notes.)
