Humility, Will, and Level 5 Leadership: An Interview with Jim Collins
Brosnan, Michael
Independent School, v74 n3 Spr 2015
Organizational expert, Jim Collins, is the author of "Good to Great" (2001) and "How the Mighty Fall" (2009) and coauthor of "Great by Choice" (2011). Collins also authored a monograph entitled, "Good to Great and the Social Sectors," and presented his findings at the 2007 NAIS Conference. Recently, Collins spent two years as the Class of 1951 Leadership Chair for the Study of Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point and now has embarked on research about educational leadership. In this interview, Michael Brosnan probes Collins on the following topics: what he has learned about school leadership since his presentation in 2007, what he hopes to investigate and learn in his educational leadership research efforts, advice he can give trustees about the transition of leadership in independent schools, the best place for schools to look for new heads, the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 leaders, advice on balancing school tradition and innovation, and younger leaders and generational differences particularly in independent schools.
