As she reflects on the question forming the title of this piece, the author begins with a premise--namely, that they became teacher educators because they are motivated to make a difference. They are committed to education, and they feel compelled to prepare the next generation of teachers. With the best of intentions, the author does not think that any one of them would settle for mediocrity or a reproduction of an oppressive educational system. Therefore, they must be willing to challenge themselves and awaken their "conscientizacion" (sociocultural consciousness a la Freire) through a process of dialogic discourse situated within social praxis, reflection, and political action. It is through this process that they can uncover, appraise, and reconstruct their long-held beliefs. To initiate this discourse, the author discusses several challenges throughout this essay.
