The purpose of this study was to compare the retention factors between first-generation college students and second- and third-generation college students in the postsecondary educational setting. This study examined the differences in the preselected retention factors: faculty-student interaction, college mentor, academic support, residential status, on-campus involvement and financial status of first-generation college students and second- and third-generation college students. The study also examined these retention factors based on participants' gender and ethnicity. A data set from the National Center for Education Statistics, which contained survey results from a sample of approximately 18,600 students from 1,360 national postsecondary institutions was used in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student's t-tests, logistic regressions and weighted least square regressions. Results of the study indicated that second- and third-generation college students were more academically and socially integrated into their college environment than first-generation college students. Regression analysis results of the Likelihood of Success Model (LSM) found that students' generational status, gender, and financial status along with academic and social integration variables were predictors of continued retention among retained college students in this study.
