Safety education information is provided in this guide designed for Pennsylvania industrial arts teachers. Twelve sections and section topics include the following: introduction (policy statement on safety); responsibility (school board and superintendent, principal and/or department head, the teacher); emergency action (primary concerns, secondary concerns, communicating safety to parents, hazardous conditions report, accident reporting, accident reporting and analysis, accident report form); safety for developmentally disabled and handicapped students (suggested teaching techniques); elementary industrial arts safety; industrial materials (compressed gas, dust, fumes, flammable and combustible liquids, foundry safe practices, and woodworking); power technology, (general precautions, personal health considerations, grease, oil, fuels and solvents, storage batteries, and combustible liquids); visual communications (drafting room safety practices); instructional techniques, (safety inspections, safe practices in use and care of equipment, safety rules for power equipment, equipment instruction sheets and evaluation, and safety rules for portable electric hand tools); personal protection (eye protector selection chart, lesson plan for eye safety, chart of noise sources, respiratory protection, back strains and proper lifting); facility planning (generally accepted standards and practices); and teacher liability in school shop accidents.
