In order to reveal trends in community college enrollments in Washington, student demographic and enrollment data for academic year 1977-78 were compiled and compared with figures for previous years. The report provides annualized averages for full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollments for the system for the years 1967 to 1977, and for FTE students by institutional intent (academic, occupational, etc.) for 1967 to 1978. Quarterly enrollments are summarized for the system and by district. Student characteristics focused upon in the study include age, sex, source, ethnic background, veteran and residency status, credit-hour load, enrollment category, and headcount and FTE enrollments by time and location. Study findings for 1977-78 include the following: (1) over 171,000 students were enrolled during Fall quarter 1977, an increase of 540% over 1962; (2) total annualized average FTE's were 89,768--out of this, state-supported annualized average FTE's accounted for 85,666; (3) 75% of all students were 21 or older; (4) increasing female enrollments exceeded male enrollments by nearly 7% (51% vs. 45%); (5) minority students accounted for 9% of total enrollment; (6) non-resident student enrollment increased from 2.71% in 1971 to 3.28% in 1977; (7) the percentage of veterans declined from 14% in 1975 to 7.96% in 1977; (8) part-time students accounted for 62% of enrollments; and (9) 64% of students were not entering from high school or another higher education institution.
