The Experience of Sexual Harassment among Grade-School Students: Early Socialization of Female Subordination.
Murnen, Sarah K.; Smolak, Linda
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v43 n1-2 p1-17 Jul 2000
Investigated elementary students' interpretations of sexual harassment and how they related to self-esteem and body esteem. After hearing scenarios exemplifying peer harassment, students expressed their thoughts and completed gender role, self-esteem, and body esteem scales. Most children had experienced peer harassment. Total harassment negatively related to girls' self-esteem. The meaning of sexual harassment differed by gender. (SM)
