The Prehistory of Discovery: Precursors of Representational Change in Solving Gear System Problems.
Dixon, James A.; Bangert, Ashley S.
Developmental Psychology, v38 n6 p918-33 Nov 2002
This study investigated whether the process of representational change undergoes developmental change or different processes occupy different niches in the course of knowledge acquisition. Subjects--college, third-, and sixth-grade students--solved gear system problems over two sessions. Findings indicated that for all grades, discovery of the gear system's physical principles was consistent with theory revision. Discovering a more sophisticated strategy, based on alternating gear sequences, was consistent with redescription. (Author/KB)
