Ohio's Foray into Evidence-Based Practice
Findlay, Christine
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v23 n2 p24-26 Oct 2006
Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) has been working for many years to gather evidence in hopes of convincing their state government of the need for a certified library media specialist in every school. Its latest efforts began in 2002 when the board of OELMA applied for a grant to do a state study. Board members of OELMA, however, decided to take a little different slant with their study so, therefore, began work with Dr. Ross Todd and Dr. Carol Kuhlthau of Rutgers University on the Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries Research Project. OELMA next contracted with the two Ohio Study Project Managers, Gayle Geitgey and Ann Tepe, who worked with Dr. Todd to create a staff development model for library media specialists. The module, "Can You Find the Evidence-Based Practice in Your School Library?" was designed to help library media specialists look critically at their own programs through Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). This module was later expanded to full-day workshops, which received very positive feedback from participating library media specialists. In this article, the author describes the progression of events that led OELMA to a practical implementation of the results. (Contains 12 resources.)
