The organizers of the First New York Book Fair have listed the alternative presses that brought exhibits to the fair, as well as organizations interested in the non-establishment publications scene. According to the introduction, some directions taken by the new publishers are "new life-styles, ecology, mysticism, and spiritual awareness, photography, socialism, poetry and experimental fiction, feminism, science fiction, films, gay liberation, black literature, social change, liberation movements and lots more; in fine printing, offset books and magazines, and in mimeographing and graphics; and visual literature."
