The booklet is designed to be used as a teaching resource for junior high or secondary classes studying global affairs and interdependence. It describes the transnational exchange of farm products and manufactured goods between mid-America and foreign countries. Mid-America is made up of the 12 Great Lakes and Plains states, which include prime agricultural and industrial regions of the United States. The booklet is presented in five chapters. Chapter one explains the increasing interdependence of countries in the modern technological age, describes the location of mid-America, and discusses the importance of international trade. Chapter two discusses the role of the St. Lawrence Seaway in facilitating transnational trade. Cargo, toll charges, and length of shipping season are discussed. How a firm gets started in the export business is reviewed in chapter three. A hypothetical manufacturer of agricultural machinery is used as an example. Detailed information is provided on agencies which assist the exporter, services of the Bureau of International Commerce, special trade terms and documents, and functions of every person in the chain between exporter and foreign buyer. Chapter four defines the goals and activities of transnational corporations, and chapter five examines prospects for future trade. (AV)
