Multimedia Technology. An Encyclopedia Publisher's Perspective.
Cook, Peter
Learning Tomorrow: Journal of the Apple Education Advisory Council, n3 p237-262 Spr 1987
This paper describes the Grolier Publishing Company's development of its encyclopedic text database by editing the machine-readable data files from which the Academic American Encyclopedia was printed, and its longer-term objective of creating a multimedia encyclopedia when the technology for a viable delivery system becomes available. Topics discussed include the role and the limitations of print encyclopedias; the limitations of electronic media; the enhancement of encyclopedia information in electronic media; and future plans for an audiovisual database. A simulated information search is presented in 17 figures depicting the screen on an Apple Macintosh computer at different stages of the search. (EW)
