Delivering on a commitment to diversity in schools, colleges, and universities is a living, breathing endeavor for many members of the advancement community. While a diversity leadership agenda is set clearly from the top, advancement officers can and must play a critical role in this arena. Effective development and alumni leaders are uniquely positioned to set an aggressive course for inclusivity. They have the unique opportunity to frame the diversity imperative for countless stakeholders. Advancement professionals have the opportunity to take action in the routine, mundane, everyday decisions of their work with families and alumni, donors and friends. In this article, the author discusses how to promote diversity in day-to-day advancement work. She outlines simple steps a mindful development officer may consider to enhance and advance an institution's commitment to diversity.
