The present study was conducted in an effort to develop a model to predict "burnout" in community college faculty members using the demographic predictors of employment status, teaching load, age, teaching experience and gender. Originally termed by Herbert Freudenberger in 1974, burnout is a phenomenon that has been investigated in a number of workplace settings, both academic and non-academic. Of the research that has been conducted in post-secondary academic settings, the vast majority has excluded the community college environment, which is arguably quite different than its four-year counterpart. As such, the research findings from four-year college studies may not generalize to community college settings. Community colleges customarily emphasis teaching rather than research, include more academically underprepared students, and require that faculty members teach heavier loads. These differences manifest themselves in a number of ways that may translate into an increased likelihood of burnout for community college faculty members. This study was undertaken to bridge this gap in the research literature by developing a model to predict burnout specifically in the community college faculty population.
