Teaching Fractions
McLeman, Laura Kondek; Cavell, Heather A.
Teaching Children Mathematics, v15 n8 p494-501 Apr 2009
Teacher educators are constantly searching for ways to better prepare preservice teachers to enter the education field. One way that has gained prominence in the last twenty years is through examining and discussing authentic student work samples. Research suggests that doing so helps preservice teachers to (1) gain insight into their own beliefs about what it means to know and do mathematics and (2) acquire some elements of the knowledge they need for teaching. To support the development of preservice elementary teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching fractions, the authors created and implemented a mathematics-for-teaching course module centered on student written work and verbal explanations. This article briefly discusses the module's development and implementation, some observations and reflections from the pilot implementation, and some of the questions that arose.
