Findings and recommendations of a University of Alberta task force study on the mature student are presented. Study objectives were as follows: to identify the characteristics of the mature student population at the university, to identify major concerns and needs of this population, to determine to what extent the university meets the needs of the mature student, and to survey the support mechanisms for mature students in the general community. The following institutional problems are examined: obtaining preadmission information; obtaining information from faculty offices; academic counseling; support services (library, offices, bookstore); choice of evening courses; residency requirements; registration; transfer of credits; credit by special assessment; parking; and study space. Situational problems are also covered: time pressures; balancing multiple responsibilities; finances; child care; lack of encouragement from family and peers; disruption of family life; and lack of peer group contact. In addition, the following academic concerns are addressed: examinations, essay writing, study habits, skill improvement, and upgrading and remediation.
