A Child-Centred Approach to Learning about Healthy Eating
Telford, Francesca
Primary Science, n128 p9-11 May 2013
Science involves children in exploring and gaining understanding about the world they live in. Use of a creative and imaginative approach to science can enhance this learning in many ways (Coates and Wilson, 2003). When presented with the challenge of teaching a series of science lessons on food and nutrition to a mixed class of years 4 and 5 (ages 8-10), the author and her colleagues decided to focus on creating a relevant and creative context in which the children could make decisions and direct their own learning. Their aim was to engage and motivate children through a cross-curricular, contextual, child-centred learning experience. In this article the author describes how she implemented this approach through multiple classroom sessions.
