Bringing Globalization into the Classroom
Billings, Nancy Carter
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n3 p48-50 2006
Some of the most effective resources for bringing the concept of globalization into the classroom is through the personal and professional experiences of the classroom teacher, the personal experiences of students from diverse cultures, the inclusion of curriculum activities with a global context, and the involvement of guest speakers with global backgrounds. Teacher should seek the following learning outcomes for students: (1) Increased sensitivity to differences in values, family cultures, job opportunities, and dietary practices; (2) Increased tolerance for such differences; (3) Increased understanding of the global supply chain for food, clothes, and electronics; and (4) Expanded career awareness. This article describes several curriculum activities that can help teachers bring globalization into the classroom.
