Living Language and Culture: Concordia Language Villages--One Example of Learning outside the Classroom
Phillippe, Denise E.
Learning Languages, v17 n2 p27-29 Spr 2012
At Concordia Language Villages, language and culture are inextricably intertwined, as they are in life. Participants "live" and "do" language and culture 16 hours per day. The experiential, residential setting immerses the participants in the culture of the country or countries where the target language is spoken through food, music, sports, dance, games and activities; students learn to function in a number of target-language contexts such as stores, social settings and homes, building skills in key communicative tasks. Students learn outside the classroom at Concordia Language Villages in three key ways. One, students participate in what is often called a "grand simulation" of a trip abroad. Two, students live in the residential programing in which everyday life is a powerful part of the curriculum. Three, students are out-of-doors regularly. While relatively few teachers will be able to create a residential program for a weekend or two weeks, all teachers will find some program elements they can successfully incorporate in their teaching, inside or outside the classroom. The example of Concordia Language Villages can help language teachers construct powerful learning experiences for students that get them outdoors, take advantage of daily life and daily routines or rituals and simulate aspects of a trip abroad.
