FCS and English: Dual Class Develops "Taste" for Other Cultures
Caya, Billie Ann
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n1 p58 2005
"Foods and Literature of the World" is a dual class taught at Bismarck High School in Bismarck, North Dakota. There are two components of the class--English and family and consumer sciences (FCS). (The English component fulfills the 12th grade English requirement.) Culture is explored through class discussion, essay writing, research, and oral reports as well as the reading of one particular novel chosen to represent the culture itself. The literature selected compliments the units from the Foods portion of the class. The Foods portion of the class is taught by an FCS instructor. Foods students prepare recipes from countries around the world using traditional ingredients and cooking utensils while learning about the culture and how it affects food preparation. Even though it is an elective, however, the Foods class cannot be taken without the English. The class is usually a two-section class, with the first period English moving to second period Foods, and vice versa. When the student leaves "Foods and Literature of the World," they have a good "taste" of different foods, culture, and literature.
