The Food Peddlers. Nutrition Comes Alive. Level 3. Nutrition Educator's Guide and Work Sheets, Letters to Parents, Recipes. Revised Edition.
Mapes, Martha C.; Thonney, Patricia
This guide provides a nutrition education program for elementary school students that spans kindergarten through Grade 3 as well as providing activities for specific levels. Nutrition education objectives are stated for each grade level: (1) kindergarten--students will become familiar with and motivated to eat a variety of foods; (2) grade one--students will appreciate the importance of nutritious foods to promote growth; (3) grade two--students will recognize that choosing appropriate foods and being physically fit will benefit their health; and (4) grade three--students will understand that food choices are influenced by physical, cultural, and economic factors. An explanation is given of what the students should understand about the objective for each level. Three sections for Grade 3 class activities are proposed. Section 1 focuses on how sensory perceptions influence our food choices. Section 2 explores the impact that family, social, and community groupings have on our choices. The final section examines the influence of commercial advertising and helps the student develop skills to make better-informed decisions about foods that are advertised. A supplement to this guide contains worksheets, letters for parents, and recipes. A Spanish translation of the letters for parents is provided. (JD)
