The Impossible Child in School--at Home: A Guide for Caring Teachers and Parents.
Rapp, Doris J.
Intended for teachers and parents, the book offers guidelines for recognizing and dealing with allergies as causes of learning and behavior problems. Each chapter identifies relevant references in the bibliography. In the first chapter such signs of behavioral reactions as facial or body clues, changes in school performance, and changes in writing or drawing are described. Chapters 2 and 3 briefly review causes of symptoms originating inside a school (e.g., the odor of cleaning fluids) and causes of symptoms originating outside school (e.g., pollen seasons, temporal factors). Chapter 4 discusses symptoms related to foods and ways to detect food sensitivities such as the single food elimination diet and the rotary diet. Recognition of chemical sensitivities and their behavioral symptoms are considered in chapter 5. The sixth chapter looks at the relation of physical or emotional stress to the inability to learn. The teacher's role, once cause and effect relationships have been established, is examined in chapter 7, and two case studies of learning disabled children are presented to illustrate how a child's school performance can improve when teachers relate their observations to parents. The final chapter summarizes information on the role of allergy in relation to activity and behavior problems, noting differences of opinion regarding allergy care. Six appendices include suggestions for inservice school conferences and parent-teacher conferences, source references, a pollen calendar, and a 108-item bibliography. (DB)
