The sound of the Native American flute seems to convey care, sadness, loneliness, longing, heartfelt emotion, a sense of the natural world, wisdom, the human spirit, and a sense of culture. It is a sound that competes for attention, dramatically punctuating messages about First Nation peoples on television and in movies. A relatively small group of music educators in the United States and Canada has seen and embraced the potential of the Native American Indian flute and has introduced and used the instrument in their classrooms.
