Exit Stage Left (And Right): Getting Your Chorus on and off the Stage
Van Hoven, Scott
Teaching Music, v11 n4 p30 Feb 2004
A key element of a well-received performance is the efficient flow of performers on and off the stage. This important detail is often neglected until the last minute, with results that are, to say the least, unpredictable. While moving a large number of students on and off the stage will always take time, slow movement and ragged appearance while the chorus moves on and off the risers is unnecessary. The front rows swift departure, followed by hesitation, nervous glances down the newly exposed row, and noisy steps down and off can detract from an otherwise professional performance. You expect your singers to perform professionally--shouldn't that extend to how they enter and leave the stage? Even when planned and rehearsed, moving students on and off the stage during a concert is time taken away from the music. A few simple, easily implemented changes can cut the dead time.
