Using Science and Much More to Beat the Flood

The Beat the Flood challenge involves designing and building a model flood-proof home, which is then tested in "flood" conditions. It is set on the fictitious Watu Island. The children form teams, with each team member being assigned a responsibility for the duration of the task--team leader, chief recorder, and resource manager. This strategy was useful for ensuring that everyone takes an active role throughout the project. Through discussion and research, the class learns that, in a flood, water is not clean, because of sewage and contaminants. Linking the images they see on the television with the project, the children imagine what it might be like to live in a flooded area, growing concerned about the hidden dangers below the surface of the water. In this article, Claire Seeley's class learns the important role of science and technology in solving a real-world problem as they take on this practical challenge.
