Collaboratively Establishing High School Writing Centers in Flint, Michigan, to Support the Improvement of Students' Writing Skills
Barnett, Robert
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v80 n2 p80-82 Nov-Dec 2006
The Greater Flint Educational Consortium on Writing Improvement, comprising local high school teachers and area college writing instructors, has worked for several years to improve the transition students make from their high school to college writing experiences. The focus of the most recent consortium was on writing support services. This article describes the outcomes of a pilot project that was created to establish fully functional writing centers in each school. Four schools were chosen to work with the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) Writing Center on this pilot project. The project has allowed the ongoing development of high school student writing skills, while contributing to their preparation for post-secondary work. The project has also established important new connections between UM-Flint, a commuter campus, and the local Flint schools.
