Pocket Power, Grades K-2. Teacher Guide [and] Student Storybook. Financial Fitness for Life.
Hopkins, Martha C.; Wright, Donna K.
Developing financial fitness requires first developing a knowledge base and then applying it. This teacher guide and student storybook package focuses on personal finance skills for primary school students in grades K-2. The teacher guide contains 16 lessons divided into the 5 theme areas of earning an income, saving, spending, borrowing, and managing money. Each lesson, if fully implemented, will generally take two class periods. Most lessons in the guide include two to three major activities besides the "Warm-up" (Introduction) and the "Cool Down" (summary and review). Activities are categorized as those suitable for all students at grades K-2 and those that may be challenging for some students at the K-2 level. For each lesson, there is a story found in the student storybook"Penny and Nicholas: The Pocket Power Kids" that the teacher reads to the students. The storybook presents 16 sequential stories that also can be used individually. Besides the fitness focus, the guide's materials are based on the National Council on Economic Education's Voluntary National Content Standards for Economics. Crosstraining activities are an integral part of the materials for grades K-2. The teacher guide lists equipment needed, gives student objectives, and provides a lesson description. (Contains a language arts matrix, a mathematics matrix, an economics matrix, and a personal finance matrix at the beginning of the guide.) (BT)
