CompuEnglish: An Experimental Program. Progress Report I on Computer English Program. Special Report 85-2.
Luesebrink, Marjorie; And Others
This first-year progress report considers the objectives and achievements of CompuEnglish, a project developed at Saddleback College's North Campus (California) to introduce word processing skills into traditional composition classes. Section I offers a summary report on progress as of 1985, reviewing the four phases of project implementation and evaluation. Section II describes the limited-scale CompuEnglish program offered in fall 1984, which used a team teaching approach and computer laboratory to introduce word processing skills to Freshman Composition and Business Report and Letter Writing classes. Student responses to the project are included in this section. Section III looks at the research strategy developed for implementation in spring 1985, involving a comparison of CompuEnglish and control sections of Freshman Composition in terms of progress, attitudes, computer usage, the qualitative differences between computer-prepared and typewriter-generated papers, improvements in essay writing, and differences in editing skills. After section IV reviews the college's options for the future, section V presents a bibliography on the use of computers in writing instruction. Appendices provide planning documents, survey instruments, and interim reports on the project. (EJV)
