The Verbal Behavior of Educational Administrators: An Analysis of the Language of School Principals. Final Report.
Lucietto, Lena L.
This research attempted to identify relationships that exist between linguistic factors and some nonlinguistic variables. Twenty principals provided 60 taped conversations with teachers and responded to questionnaires designed to elicit selected demographic data and measures of interpersonal needs along the dimensions of the Schutz FIRO-B instrument. Teachers provided their perceptions of administrative performance by responding to Halpin's Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ). Content analysis, using the General Inquirer system, identified several language usage patterns, and cluster analysis identified subgroups of principals with similar demographic configurations. Language usage patterns correlated highly with the LBDQ dimensions Initiating Structure and Consideration and with two of the FIRO-B dimensions -- Inclusion Wanted and Control Wanted. Demographic clusters correlated with verbal patterns. (RA)
