An Educational Program Dealing with Fire Safety. Curriculum and Resource Guide.
Rhode Island State Dept. of Education, Providence.
A series of activities for fire safety education in grades K-12 is presented. The document is organized into three parts: grades K-3; 4-6; and 7-12. Each activity is preceded by general and specific concepts to be stressed. Concepts for grades K-3 stress usefulness and types of fire, fire drills, the fire fighting profession, and the responsibility of the individual for fire prevention in the home and community. Activities include laboratory experiments, simulations to teach children to crawl under smoke and to "stop, drop, and roll" if fire touches them, parent educational meetings, and visits to a fire station. Concepts for Grades 4-6 include the history of fire fighting in America, causes of fires, advantages and dangers of electricity, and home escape routes. Activities involve research, mapping out escape routes, listing flammable items found in the home, and conducting a smoke drill. Concepts for grades 7-12 emphasize learning behaviors to protect and save lives and understanding that carelessness destroys natural resources and that arson and false alarms cause injury or loss of life. Students display electrical materials, write a research paper, learn the elements of a home evacuation plan, and create a collage on the subject of outdoor fires. Appendices include resource materials, a home fire safety check list, and instructions for fire and smoke drills. (KC)
