This study guide, used in association with the "Family Day Care Handbook" (1974), provides an independent study course for baby-sitters and others who want to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become certified as family day care providers. Each of the six units in the guide consists of introductory reading material, assigned reading in the text, study notes, self-test questions, and a written assignment. Introductory reading material in Unit I provides background information concerning family day care; defines kinds of child care; discusses licensing, registration, certification, and approval regulations; and briefly explores the kind of training and preparation needed to provide quality care for children. Unit II focuses on child growth and development and differentiates between custodial and developmental care. Health and safety, including immunizations, accidents, poison prevention, and fire safety, are discussed in Unit III. Discussions of nutrients, digestive processes, and malnutrition caused by overeating and famine are offered in Unit IV. The history of family day care is reviewed in Unit V. In the sixth and concluding unit, guidelines for management and record keeping activities as well as a discussion of community and individual resources are provided. A key to self-test questions, examination directions, a final examination request form and additional related course materials are included in the study guide. (Author/RH)
