Magical Mysteries. Texas Reading Club, 1984. A Librarian's Planning Handbook.
Oliver, Jim
Designed to encourage library use by Texas youth, the Texas Reading Club programs usually include a structured reading program and a variety of entertaining literature-related storyhours, puppet shows, films, and other attractive happenings. This handbook for the 1984 theme--"magical mysteries"--focuses on mysteries, magic, and adventure stories, although some fantasies are included in which the main characters are magical. Guidelines are provided for planning goals and objectives; evaluation; resources (materials and personnel); rules and requirements; and programs (personnel, space, intended audience, and community resources). Suggestions for publicizing the program include sample publicity releases. Low budget ideas for programs and activities include the mysteries of weather, television, and fingerprinting; secret codes and messages, "private eye-Q"; a riddle day; a mythical beasts workshop; a mystery race; costume parties; a magical mystery box; storytime programs; magic shows; film programs; and puppetry. Resources provided include storytime suggestions; sources of information on magic supplies and magicians; a script for a puppet show; clip art, games, and puzzles; and a bibliography of program-related books for children from preschool through elementary school age.
