The Future of Portable Devices is the "PITs"
Peters, Tom; Bell, Lori
Computers in Libraries, v26 n3 p22-25 Mar 2006
According to recent media reports, MP3 players are one of the hottest gift item these days, particularly for adolescents. The broad success of these devices, however, has revealed flaws in the designers' noninclusive thinking. The accessibility challenges for these players are similar to those for other portable electronic gadgets, such as PDAs and cell phones. The feature that affects accessibility the most with these units is button design. Users with mobility challenges in their arms, hands, and especially fingers will find it difficult to use some brands, and many features are inaccessible to visually challenged individuals. The manufacturers of these products must remember that a multistage process is only as accessible as its least accessible stage.
