Single mothers struggle with balancing life challenges and childcare necessities while attending college. Consequently, students who are single mothers experience psychological distress. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the common, life and resiliency factors shared by single mothers who are students. The study was conducted at a community college located in Southeastern United States. The 10 study participants responded to an interview guide of field-tested questions, which were created by the researcher. Data revealed single mothers shared common challenges including financial; social support, cultural and career challenges. Single mothers also shared resiliency factors, which included personal factors and environment factors. The study highlighted the need for both personal and community support for single mothers and their children. Participants identified the role of the community college as being essential to their success. Future research should focus on the role the college plays as a factor of success and should include a larger sample and greater diversity.
